Dior has paid €841,000 for the famous photograph of model Dovima swathed in a Dior evening gown posing with two circus elephants.
“It is the most expensive photograph of this kind to have been sold in France,” said Matthieu Humery, specialist and head of photography sales at Christie’s in Paris.
The auction included 65 prints by Avedon, who passed away in 2004.
The sale netted €5.5 million euros for The Richard Avedon Foundation in New York and included a semi-nude photo of Stephanie Seymour, which sold for €265,000.
