Graeme Black from Desa

I am a big fan of British designer Graeme Black. I like his elegant touch, the sleek lines and that ladylike silhouette that he knows how to reinterpret in such a modern way.

He also knows what luxury means. Having worked with Giorgio Armani for years, and then at the Italian House of Ferragamo, he’s been very close to the best fabrics, the softest leathers, the finest cashmeres and the most precious silks.

That’s why we loved him when he showed at London Fashion Week, he really stood out as one of the most refined British designers.

Now I am pleased he has got a new project. He’s the creative director of Desa, the Turkish fashion brand, famous for its leather. I went to check the new collection for Autumn Winter 2012 and I loved it.

Graeme’s starting point was indeed the fusion of the two wonderful cultures: the English sartorial style and the historical and multicultural life of the city of Istanbul.

I was impressed by a tan leather trench coat, so sleek and soft, a chic black cape, perfectly cut, and a short jacket in laser cut pony skin, so beautifully intricate.

The shoes, handbags and gloves are also very elegant, and really show the major craftsmanship of Desa. As Graeme added, “these delicately tooled leathers are a delightful reflection of ‘made in Istanbul’ fused with a nod to English tweeds, and a love of an equestrian lifestyle’. I couldn’t agree more.

Pippa Vosper

Pippa Vosper is reinventing maternity wear. That is, she’s refusing to wear it. Instead of saying hello to spandex and goodbye to style, she is eschewing niche pregnancy brands in favour of continuing to wear the labels she loves, from Alaia to Alexander McQueen. Luckily, she’s showing us how to do it too, with new website Maternally Chic.

Having begun her working life in creative advertising, Pippa soon realised her calling was to that of the sartorial gods and made the transition into a successful styling career. With five i-D covers to her name, as well as extensive work for iconic publications such as Vogue, L’uomo Vogue, W, V Man and Interview magazine alongside high profile celebrity consultation, she now holds the title of Fashion Editor at the prestigious Harper’s Bazaar.

Here she curates an exceptionally personal, and extra special, selection of pieces from the Motilo shop that will remain on your style horizon for a lot longer than an expectant nine months.

How would you describe your style?

Minimal, but always with a touch of leather.

Who do you look to for inspiration?

In the current phase of my life, I would say Cate Blanchett. I had the absolute pleasure of spending time on set with her a few years ago and with her three children in tow, she remained not only charming and looked utterly beautiful, but had time for everyone around her. Balancing a family of three children while making clear and considered choices concerning her professional life and engagements is quite something, but she managed to do this with what appears to be relative ease.

What is the one item of clothing you couldn’t live without?


My Balenciaga black leather leggings – with the perfect amount of stretch, I am still able to wear them throughout my pregnancy (albeit slightly lower on the waist than usual!)

What, in your opinion, is the biggest fashion faux pas anyone could make?


Wearing clothing that is obviously a size too small.

Oui, Cannes, je t’aime! Every year this glorious film festival comes round, where celebrities can work hard, and play hard too. They promote some of the best cinematic delights of the season, and spend the rest of the time romping on the beach and hanging out in the ultimate luxe leisurewear. The question is, has it always been this way? The answer is, YES.

We bring you a collection of forgotten photographs from yesteryear, where golden oldies of the last six decades show off their glamorous lifestyles. From an eight year old Sofia Coppola, to Peter Weir chilling out with Mel Gibson and Madonna’s new perfume inspiration, we have it all. Try not to feel too jealous.

We start with the 8th Cannes Film Festival in 1953. Brigitte Bardot plays on the beach showing off that perfect body.

Uma Wang

It was a Saturday night in London when Uma Wang walked into my apartment for what turned out to be one of the longest and most fabulous last minute dinners I’ve ever hosted.

She arrived wearing a cloche hat twisted above one eye in the manner of a ‘40s screen goddess, sitting pretty atop the longest most lustrous mane of hair. Dressed in what I found out later to be men’s clothes, the overall fit was of the slightly over-sized but sexy variety. The colour palette was black on black, with a slight kick in the form of some little red brogues.

She bowed politely, and introduced herself, where no introduction was necessary. Whilst her demeanour was at first reserved, as the conversation evolved, she became gigantic, her spirit and passion filling the room. Her enthusiasm was contagious.

It seems I’m not the only one smitten with Ms Wang. The prestigious CFDA and Vogue Fashion Fund recently selected her to partake in a pioneering cultural design exchange this May with popular US duo Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler. During the first project of its kind, Wang will be living and working in the States with mentors such as Michael Kors, Theory, Barneys New York, Vogue, and Google; whilst McCullough and Hernandez explore the growing Chinese market. When asked her feelings on the scheme, Uma is as charming and humble as ever. “I’m very excited about it. Let’s see what happens and I’ll be able to tell you afterwards if it changes my influences.”

Wang studied at both the China Textile University and London’s Central Saint Martin’s before launching her own label in 2005.

“Both universities have played a very important role in my education. The first one gave me the basis of technical knowledge, but I felt that this was not moving toward new and different ideas and so the second one opened up my mind to new ways of looking at things, broadening my views.”

For the ten-year period between completing her education and starting her own business, Uma designed for a plethora of Chinese labels, all the while developing her unique aesthetic, and winning awards along the way.

When speaking with Uma, it is clear there are a surfeit of philosophies imparting meaning and substance on the collections she designs. However, as with everything she does, there is complex reasoning behind them.

“Clothes are about relationships with your physical and spiritual selves and the outside world around you. They come from connections that we see and feel, and others we only sense, but which influence our outlook on how to express ourselves externally.”

Throughout our conversation, Wang makes it clear that emotions are at the core of almost everything does. “They’re what move me. When I design, all the feelings coming from the heart join together with those coming from the textures and history of the fabrics, as well as my life experiences. Eventually we have one big driving force which gives me the power to create.”

Much of what Uma designs leans towards a solid physical weight, of the garment. There are a great deal of substantial woolens prevalent in the AW12 collection, a completely conscious decision motivated by the inner senses once again, as opposed to mere aesthetics.

“I think it’s very important to feel what you are wearing; its weight giving you the sense of its presence and its effect on you. The clothes we choose are our homes for the body and soul – they surround you and have to make you feel safe, stable and comfortable. This doesn’t happen if they are insubstantial.”

For Uma, “fabric is everything.” After a great deal of research, she travels the world in search of the most interesting materials. She also works closely with an esteemed Italian textile designer and together they create the fabrics which build the brand’s identity. The cloth is itself is used as a tool to portray an altogether refreshing demonstration of what is considered ‘sexy’.

“I like to create a distance, a space between the form and the garment so that when a woman walks, the fabric touches the body at different points and creates a variety of shapes according to movement itself.

I usually create more details in the back of the clothes. I find that the idea of what is hidden and not immediately visible can cause an unexpected surprise in whoever is watching. But in fact, it’s not only about the clothes – it’s the person who highlights personality through garments. I would like each piece to find its natural owner and vice-versa.”

It is fair to say that China is having somewhat of ‘a moment’ right now, and Uma Wang is edging closer to the forefront. I was interested to know if Shanghai, where she lives, inspires her.

“Indeed I’m influenced by Chinese culture and you will find a mix of both the East and the West in my clothes and styles, but I don’t want the collection to show this literally with signs or objects. I hope people understand the culture through the connection with my clothes and the subsequent feelings that they can get from them.”

There is one thing Uma says that I particularly love, that a woman’s clothes have to pass from mother to daughter because the daughter has to smell the mother; the clothes have to have a history. Here she explains further:

“Quality is the most important thing. If it is strong, the garment will resist time and will be able to be passed from one generation to the other and will never go out of style, always remaining something good and beautiful to wear. Silhouettes are the other important part. I search for simple shapes which will always be beautiful and comfortable over time. In this way, my clothes will stay with you forever.”

For many designers at such a pivotal stage in their career, it is tempting to ask the ‘success’ question: how will you know when you’ve made it? In her characteristically charming and humble way, Uma answers as such:

“When I see people loving the brand, I feel happy and proud of course. But we still have a long way to go and things to learn.”

By the end of the night, we were connected, in the Uma way of connecting. Which is on a deeper and almost intrinsically spiritual level.

A line she recited from her favourite Chinese poem really struck a chord: “I see you, I don’t see your face.” I knew then that I’d been lucky enough to meet someone truly unique. She was all that I would ever want in a friend, and I knew that we would meet again at some serendipitous point.

The 65th Cannes film festival has officially begun, and will continue to dominate our cultural and style horizons until its close on the 27th May. With an iconic image of Marilyn Monroe adorning the promotional materials this year, the foxy tone has already been set.

As anticipated, the hysterical Sacha Baron Cohen has already staged his big stunt to generate press for forthcoming movie, The Dictator. Something along the lines of fondling then (mock) shooting Elisabetta Canalis on a yacht. On a more refined note, Wed Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom has kicked off proceedings with an indie shaped bang. In the latest of his jovial, and slightly esoteric, films we see the usual all star ensemble of favourites such as Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartz embarking on a hazy romp. Joining the retro escapade this time are Edward Norton and Bruce Willis.

Also making it’s debut during the course of the celebrations is the much anticipated Cosmopolis from David Kronenberg. With Twilight’s Robert Pattinson in the lead role, this is sure to attract a bevvy of attention, irrespective of merit. Though we’re sure it’s fantastic – obviously.

As is de rigeur with all things bedazzlingly star-studded, there will obviously be a strong fashion focus. In addition to the copious amounts of red carpet and press call offerings for us to dissect, brands such as Christian Dior and Gucci have a heavy involvement with the occasion. The former even has its own suite at the central Majestic Hotel – the A-List hub situated in the midst of the cinematic chaos. Gucci are also said to be ‘working on something special’ in accordance with their continued support of Martin Scorcese’s Film Foundation. Most eyebrow-raising and sartorially pulse raising of all though, is the news that Carine Roitfeld is to stage an all black fashion show on the 24th May at the the amfAR Cinema Against Aids Gala.

Whilst we’re in little doubt that these few weeks are bound to give rise to some of the finest films of the next year at least, we’re knocking our ankles together with excitement over what everyone shall be wearing.

All this talk of summer accessories, holiday beauty and warm climates has our Motilo Girls thinking of their vacations. Recently, Sophia Hesketh said she thought Bali was ‘idyllic, beautiful and peaceful… all the things you need for the perfect getaway.’ However, the tropical location is not on her list of holiday destinations in the next few months.

Sophia Hesketh will be visiting her parent's house in the south of France later this year.

As well as visiting Ibiza and Tuscany, Sophia will be going to her parent’s house in the South of France to spend a few days soaking up the sun. Having some warm and wonderful places to visit has obviously been an inspiration to Sophia’s summer wardrobe.

While she’s in France, she hopes to be able to visit Cannes Film Festival and pop along to a shindig Anja Rubik is having. Once back in the UK, the Serpentine party looks to be a highlight, which she also attended last year.

’50s WORK CHIC

If you want to get professional with your ’50s love affair then something more formal and less frivolous is needed. What led you to start your own blog?

I love fashion, and spend my free time blog-hopping and seeking out style inspiration from a wide range of bloggers. I thought it would be a cool idea to house some of the chicest blog posts and blogger outfits that I’d come across, all in one place. Enter the birth of Fashion Blog Love! I felt that it was rather challenging to keep up and remember all the blogs that I came across, and thought a site that aggregated posts from different fashion blogs, would be amazingly clever, inspirational and, on the practical side of things, time-saving.

Did you always know you wanted to write about and capture fashion trends?

To be honest, I feel like I started the blog primarily because I wanted to fill a gap in the blogosphere. I know Bloglovin’ allows you to follow posts from bloggers you already know, but one of the main reasons why I started Fashion Blog Love was to help fashion lovers discover new blogs and expose fashionistas style from a variety of bloggers, not just one point of view.

How do you go about creating your blog? What is your process?

I have access to over 1,600 blogs via my twitter lists, so I sift through a few every week, and bookmark any posts I love and would subsequently like to feature. I’ll also add giveaways from different blogs, and feature Blog Spotlights submitted by bloggers.

What makes Fashion Blog Love unique?

Fashion Blog Love allows you to discover new or established blogs you may not have heard of before, and opens you to style inspiration from a wide range of bloggers. With just one click, you can find featured posts from a variety of fashion blogs from around the world. I admire how Leandra of Man Repeller carved a niche in what was a very girly, sometimes pretentious blogging atmosphere. Rather than conforming or changing her style to ‘fit in’, Leandra stayed true to her quirky, ‘man-repelling’ style, and I love that.

Our favorite ensemble is worn when Cher takes and fails her driving test. A sheer long shirt over an argyle mini with knee-high semi-transparent socks and silver pumps? Could anyone give better inspiration for the sheer trend this summer? As if!

Wry smiles for Diane Keaton and Woody Allen in Annie Hall

Annie Hall is undoubtedly one of the most hilarious and touching love stories ever told. The neurotic Alvy Singer (Allen) and his relationship Annie Hall (Keaton) is told through a series of non-linear snippets with a delicious edge of magical realism. The best thing is that the alluring heroine doesn’t don the usual floaty dresses. Her style is decidedly masculine, and her cool tailored androgyny further adds to the boy/girl sexual tensions meandering through the movie.

Ecstasy for Anita Ekberg in La Dolce Vita

One of the greatest achievements in cinema history has to be La Dolce Vita. The many episodes and segments of the story piece together several dawns, days, and nights in the life of Marcello Rubini (Marcello Mastroianni), and they really do touch upon every theme in existence. The iconic moment of the film occurs when world famous film star Sylvia (Anita Ekberg) wades into the Trevi fountain with Marcello. Her billowing black evening gown accentuates her bodacious curves and the sensual and playful attitude towards immersing such a statement frock in the water summarises the sweet, carefree bliss of this moment. Plus, the strong make-up and heavy dark fabrics strongly remind us of the AW13 catwalks…

Alabama Americana - Patricia Arquette in True Romance

The breathless passion in True Romance has won the hearts of many Motilo team members, especially our enamoured editor. Patricia Arquette plays Alabama Whitman, a call girl who falls in love with shop worker Clarence Worley (Christian Slater). Her outfits are a true testament to the colourful clash of Americana trends. Cow-hide mini skirts, polka dots, pink leopard print and plenty of colour: it’s the unabashed confidence that makes the character of Alabama so fierce. Sex, smoke and dirty dancing. Cabaret has moved from being a cult classic to one of the most iconic films of the 1970′s. Liza Minnelli firmly stood in her mother’s footsteps as a musical actress, but the themes and atmosphere of Cabaret are decidedly dark. Nazi Germany, sexual escapades, abortions and the human condition are explored against a backdrop of 1930′s glamour. Minnelli’s character, Sally Bowles, is seen in androgynous attire, floor length sumptuous gowns, and super hot hold-ups. However, our favourite outfit has to be this ensemble. Something about the rich oversized furs with her silk scarf, sultry eyes and cigarette perfectly encapsulates her sardonic persona.

With an incredible star-studded cast giving breathtaking performances, you’ll get totally swept away in the tale of a young man willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. The ever-growing tensions and suspicions are set against stunning Italian scenery, and the floaty white holiday garments that the characters wear demonstrate rather brilliantly how beauty is only skin deep.

Valley of the Dolls is the cult classic that looked at how the success of show business often went hand in hand with addiction to prescription drugs. Three women from different backgrounds react as their stories join together and fall apart. Made in 1967, the big hair, eyeliner and textured tailoring looks are in full swing. Retro chic is something that many celebrities and designers are trying to channel now, but it’s these reckless women we turn to for inspiration.

Why is it that so many of the most stylish films have an unnerving edge to them? The first few minutes of Picnic At Hanging Rock are steeped in Australian beauty. Young schoolgirls girls wake up on Valentine’s Day to embark on a journey to Hanging Rock, but some are never to return. Director Peter Weir interpreted the novel on which the film was based as having metaphorical themes of sexual awakening. Maybe this is why their floaty chiffon gowns are white from head to toe. Either way, we’re inspired to embrace the white maxi this summer.

May always seems to be the month that you dream of paradise, especially this year. The constant drizzle of rain, punctuated by full on storms, has propelled us towards fantasies of tropical beaches and crystalline seas.

This week, as you search the web for your perfect holiday attire, you’ll be treated to a unique opportunity. Luxurious swimwear designer Lisa Marie Fernandez has collaborated with genius duo Peter Pilotto to mix her sculpting sexy suits with their bold and beautiful prints.

Lisa Marie Fernandez was a successful and renowned international stylist until 2009, when she happened upon a gap in the swimwear market. After noticing that the ready-to-wear trends were signalling the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, she expected to see a reintroduction of the athletic neoprene bathing suit – but was surprised when it never happened. “I googled it for a couple of years before I did anything about it” she admits, “I never wanted to be a designer. It was never a dream of mine.” However, her research was impossible to ignore: the fashion world needed a lithe and sports-influenced swimsuit range.

As her brand has gone from strength to strength, so has that of Peter Pilotto. Their Spring Summer 2012 collection, with its ropes and citric, hallucinogenic prints garnered critical acclaim, as did the tribal melee of colours in their Autumn Winter show.

Pilotto and his co-designer, Christopher De Vos, met with Lisa Marie Fernandez early last year to see if some of their digital prints from the Resort and SS12 collections could be transferred onto her classic designs. “We didn’t even know if it was going to work” she says, “We all went on holiday knowing that we’d come back and either have a collaboration or not.” But the risk paid off and the very limited collection was put together. “I got straight on a plane and took them over to the London Fashion Week runway the next morning.” The limited edition range is available on Matches, and is set to sell out fast. “It’s like a one-time, one-off, one-season, get it now because we can’t even re-order the fabric kind of event” says Fernandez.

Her suits are above and beyond the norm, or as she puts it, “they’re not like those little fuzzy bathing suits you can’t go swimming in.” Durability and pleasing structure are key ideas in the practicality of the designs. The neoprene material, very similar to that of a wetsuit, is hugely versatile. Stretchy yet containing and incredibly strong, it can be produced in a wide variety of colours.

The different designs, which range from bandeau bikinis to modest one pieces, are all named after friends that mean something to her personally. Women like Lauren Santo Domingo, Dree Hemingway, Natalie Joos and Elisa Sednaoui all have a special style created for them. “I personally don’t have the drive to be inspired by people like Brigitte Bardot” Fernandez explains, when asked if she’d ever use a style icon from the past, “I don’t really model myself from people I don’t know. I just take inspiration from people in my own life, and from my own experiences.”

It’s this idea that gives firm footing to the brand’s identity. Fernandez knows that she wants to reach out to a certain kind of woman. “I love travel, I love the beach, and I love anything to do with the sea. So, I created my brand around that.” The designer makes it clear she’s not aiming to please ladies of leisure, “I’m interested and engaged in life: in politics, in culture, and in different countries. I think the consumer can tell what puts them off a product and what connects them to it, there will be something that resonates.”

In this way, she’s certain that she’ll only cater for the female market in the future, despite a high demand for a menswear range. “George Cortina emailed me for Karl Lagerfeld asking me to make some gold one piece bathing suits for men. I said absolutely not. This is a complete girls’ club.”

Fernandez has consistently aimed for a brand that is both simple and appealing. “It’s very identifiable. I think the consumer needs time to be able to create some brand loyalty.”

This might be one of the reasons she’s waited until now to introduce some new fabrics and colour-ways into her eponymous designs. Her Spring Summer collection takes inspiration from the ‘60s and ‘70s, and the earthy glamour of the Il Pellicano hotel in Tuscany. Dusty blues, blossoms, stripes and her characteristic zips are all seen in the versatile range, which feature subtle boning to provide support and comfort; “there’s always something to help push your body into the right places.”

Although she’d love to do another collaboration in the future, her main aim for the next few years is to focus on brand recognition. With such a unique outlook, her suits are already becoming iconic within the world of fashion, but there’s no way Fernandez will be stopping there. She sees a future of lifestyle and vacation based products for active and intelligent women working their way into her self-made brand. She’s got the market zipped up.

Anyone who is anyone has stepped out in a cropped top this spring. Seriously, go and take a browse through your favourite magazine. We guarantee that half the street styles and social scene snaps will show taut fashionistas baring their upper midriffs.

You might think that it would be nigh on impossible for a normal human being to pull off this kind of look, but there’s always a way to work any trend, even bondage, into your wardrobe.

Take something fun and spicy, like this Dolce & Gabbana chilli print cross-backed number. The tropical colours can be brought out in other details, such as a pair of Rupert Sanderson pumps in purple, a yellow Rachael Ruddick clutch, some blue-beaded Kenneth Jay Lane earrings and a rich leafy green See by Chloe skirt. The skirt is perfect because it’s high waisted but not too short. In order for the look to flatter your figure, you only want to show a slither of skin below your chest and above your navel, however, the abundance of flesh calls for something slightly more modest than a mini skirt.

Wear with a sporty cream Fred Perry jacket to tone down the look, and replace the berry-popping pumps with a pair of nude Miu Miu heels for something calmer and more classic. Either way, you’ll be looking red hot.

Retro glamour is our theme this week and the lithe young thing that perfectly personifies this is model Suki Waterhouse. As well as her adolescent looks, intense brown eyes and tousled blonde locks, Waterhouse is known for the company she keeps. Currently the girlfriend of indie rock star Miles Kane, she’s also been romantically entwined with Kooks singer Luke Pritchard.

Other friends include Mary Charteris, Georgia May Jagger, and Cara Delevigne, the sister of new Motilo Girl, Poppy Delevingne. Being firmly placed in the inner fashion circle has led her to showcase her very particular style of ‘retro-hemian’. She always looks chic and polished, but with an edge of ‘don’t care’ flair.

It seems the industry does too, as she’s been a focus of several brands’ SS12 campaigns, including Marks and Spencers, Matthew Williamson and Pepe Jeans.

So, ever since Motilo announced that we’d be taking part in this year’s Gumball 3000 rally across the US of A – there’s been one question on everyone’s lips: what car will you be driving? Well, after much searching and some very helpful tips from friends such as former Creative Director of British Vogue (and petrol head) Robin Derrick, we have finally found The One. Let us introduce you to the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Vinyl, our movable paradise for the last week of May.

Like it? Thought you might. We do too. This sweet ride is being prepped as we speak in order to keep up with our fashion demands from New York start to LA finish. So, as well as being mounted with in-car video capturing equipment, we are literally going to be wifi on wheels – ensuring you get all the live action updates, as they happen.

There’s something else you might like to know too – Motilo are going to be doing the rally naked. Yes, you read that right, naked. We are setting ourselves the challenge of being ‘styled by America’. In each stopover, we have to find the most fabulous outfits available. From Walmart to local thrift stores, Motilo CEO Sofia Barattieri di San Pietro will be game for a whole host of new looks as she’s bringing no clothes with her. Zip. Niente. Nada. When searching for our icons, we try to find women who represent more than just timeless style. Women of substance, who excite and challenge perceptions, can also have a similar stance in their fashion sense, and when this happens you have a formula for success.

Josephine Baker was born in America in 1906. She went from being an abused house worker, to a homeless scavenger, to a successful entertainer in only ten years. In another ten, she was one of the most famous and recognised faces in France.

Starting off with chorus line work in the USA, she became well known for her vaudeville performances on Broadway. The magic happened when she toured Europe, as her erotic danse sauvage acts had audiences in the palm of her hand. In France, 1925, she performed the act which would become synonymous with her name: a striptease style dance in a skirt made of a string of artificial bananas.

The brave irony of her style signified her unique selling point, of being a famous and wealthy African American entertainer. This mix of pride, humour, and passion for equality went on to inspire many writers, artist and designers, including Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso and Christian Dior. Baker mixed her heritage with the progressive fashion of the time in her newly adopted French nationality. She matched dropped hems and tassels with ethnic statement jewellery to ensure she stood out.

Her fight for human rights lasted her entire lifetime. During World War Two, Baker spied for the French government, using her celebrity status to travel and meet influential people who could give her information that would help defeat the Nazis. Unable to have her own children, after many miscarriages, she adopted 12 children of different nationalities, who she referred to as her ‘Rainbow Tribe’.

To get into the groove of Baker’s style, match classic ’20s and ’30s looks with sexy and exotic accessories. Luxurious satin and embroidered gowns can be worn with bright heels, or even sandals. Feathered capes, beaded headpieces, striking eyeliner and red lips are all good things to add to the mix. Most importantly, don’t forget to add a fruity detail to sweeten the deal.

I often see the artist Misha Milovanovich at parties and openings all around Portobello, and I am always enchanted by her incredible creative energy.

Her latest project has worked its way into the world of fashion

I enjoy talking with her about fashion, art, and music. She surprises me with her knowledge of what’s happening in the London scene, and with the new young artists, but what really fascinates me is her ever growing range of creations. From a sculpture, to a painting, a video or some furniture: they are always fun and recognisable, thanks to their unique pop-art style. Her eclectic and somehow crazy apartment is a living example of that, and it was featured in World of Interiors magazine not too long ago, as a cover story.

While at a vernissage of a photography exhibition, Misha told me about her latest project: a collection of limited edition silk scarves. They are pure energy in colour and prints, and, as she likes to say, they are ‘the result of spinning, rhyming, mixing and scratching patterns, like a voodoo hip-hop artist would do while on substances, when cognition and perception are altered…’ . Plus, they are in the best silk ever.

What led you to start your own blog?

At university there was a constant pressure to begin a blog, as it is important and beneficial to anyone on a creative course, especially those studying journalism. I always thought no one would read it. Then, one day after I came back from holiday feeling inspired, I posted some holiday pics and it started from there.

Did you always know you wanted to write about and capture fashion trends?

No, but have always had an interest in design, fashion and creating an identity through clothing. I originally wanted to pursue English Literature, but I came across a course which combined the two, and it exploded into something I really wanted to do in my career.

How do you go about creating your blog? What is your process?

I often get sudden spurts of inspiration. From Christmas food, to a magazine editorial I love, something will make me want to write. I often have several draft posts ready. I like to be retrospective or celebrate a person’s individual style, Kate Bush for example. A post can stem from anywhere.

What makes WONDER FULL unique?

I like to think I have a good eye and I try to take a different angle when writing; I see things differently and in a unique way. I blend elements of travel and film into my blog and have additions such as Pic of the Week.

Choose three words that describe it.

Interesting. Positive. Descriptive.

Favourite item you’ve ever featured?

Probably this Dolce & Gabbana clutch, which sticks in my mind. It’s so beautiful.

Who is your style icon?

I think Victoria Beckham always looks incredible, and you can’t deny that she was an icon throughout the ’90s in the Spice Girls. Gwyneth Paltrow always gets it right, Ursula Andress was gorgeous and I love that ’60s vibe. Cher in Mermaids and Madonna. The list is endless. Audrey Hepburn and those eyebrows were pretty phenomenal. Thandie Newton is particularly stunning. It’s so hard to choose just one…

If you could re-style a celebrity, who would it be, and what would you do?

It would be anyone with a wardrobe full of crystals, body-cons, and lashings of fake tan. Probably someone like Abbey Clancy, who thinks she is some kind of icon. Holly Willoughby favours the peplum too often, and acts coy even though we know she’s not. As for A-listers, I’d like to see Rihanna looking elegant more often. Also, anyone who shows their knickers.

What is the accessory you cannot live without?

I love my Michael Kors leather studded wrap bracelet. Also, jeans, a black tote, and a good blazer.

What is your favourite thing about Motilo?

I love the interactive side to the website – it’s such a great idea. I love creating looks as it’s not only fun, but you learn so much about what you like and it inspires you so much! The magazine is great too, it’s so well written and bang on the ball.

How would you describe your own style?

Sometimes I want to be pretty, other times with a harder edge. It depends so much on the occasion, my mood, the weather! I love trousers and little dresses. I love to get dressed up, wear heels and go out for the evening.

What is your favourite book?

Frankenstein is amazing. I loved studying it within an inch of its life at A-Level. The idea is amazing; the egotistical man whose idea backfires, and the descriptions are just incredible. The film version with Helena Bonham Carter is good too.

Fashion highlight of 2011?

Christina Ricci in Zac Posen at last year’s Met Gala. She looked absolutely stunning and seeing her arrive was one of the highlights of my time spent in New York. I love her.

What other bloggers do you admire?

I constantly read Then She’ll Carelessly Cut You and The Robyn Diaries as they are humble, inspiring and fun.

What does the future hold for WONDER FULL?

I am continuing to post like I am, as I develop into my own style. It’s great when someone sees your blog, and interacts with it. It means your hard work is getting the recognition you feel it deserves, which in turn means it has value. If that continues, I’ll be really happy. Sponsored posts would be the cherry on top!

Crystal blue seas, warm sand, a laid-back atmosphere and a stunning location steeped in cultural history. There aren’t many places where you can find all of those luxuries, but one of them is Greece.

This small country has one of the richest and most impressive heritages on Earth, and the ancient inhabitants worshiped a diverse collection of gods, many of which we are still familiar with today.

Aphrodite, Athena and Demeter are just some of the symbolic characters brought to life by Christina Martini of Ancient Greek Sandals. Her ancestry and love of history led her to co-found a company that recreates the timeless and yet historical art of ancient sandal making.

We have been working together to give you a chance at winning one of their best-selling styles, the Ikaria. We also spoke to Martini to find out more about the process behind designing these amazing summer accessories, and how your pair could last you a lifetime.

When and why did you begin designing shoes?

I studied footwear design at Cordwainers college in London.

I came to the UK to study fashion design like millions of students. I always loved shoes, so when I found out that a specialised design course for footwear existed I immediately knew that this is what I wanted to do.

What was it about Ancient Greece that inspired you to start recreating and refreshing their sandal designs?

I always loved ancient Greek art, sculpture and jewellery. When I was young I wanted to become an archaeologist. I love museums and archaeological sites, I can stay there for hours. So I combined my love of history with my love for shoes.

Some of the sandals I design derive directly from ideas seen on ancient Greek vases or sculptures, others are just come from the imagination. My inspiration is endless.

Did you have to research the history aspect before you started putting your ideas together?

We obviously looked to ancient Greek history and mythology for ideas, but the research was more focused on finding artisans and craftsmen that could reproduce the antique methods we were after for our sandals.

Tell us about how and why the sandals improve with age and wear?

It is the quality and the treatment of the leather that we use for the upper, as well as for the insole and sole. It becomes softer with wear, and darker with the sun, though water is best avoided because it stains natural leather. The aim is for our sandals to carry memories of many summers, not just one. Quality plays a big role, we didn’t just want to create a line of beautiful sandals.

What is your personal favourite design? Which is the one you wear the most?

The one I wear the most is Ariadne for the day, it holds my foot perfectly and I can walk for hours.

For summer nights my personal favourite is Medea in gold.

Which is the Ancient Greek god you identify with most and why?

At this moment is Demetra, the goddess of harvest. For the past year I have lived on a farm, and I am surrounded by olive groves and animals. Although it is not me that cultivates the land, I do help sometimes, and I feel more connected to nature.

Your ‘original’ designs are all named after the gods. How do you give each one the character and personality that represents the god’s power or purpose?

All the styles “originals” and “classics” are named after mythological characters : goddesses, nymphs, muses, and so on.

Every time that I design I think of what the particular hero could have been wearing on his or her feet. I make little stories in my head, it’s all imagination.

What is your favourite holiday destination?

The Cyclades, I love the rocky scenery, the sandy beaches and the smell of oregano, one of the few plants that grow there.

Could you ever see yourself making other Ancient Greek inspired products?

Yes, we have started making a small line of bags based on the same idea. A line of men’s sandals is on the way too. Maybe in the far future we can think of a line of clothes too. There are many possibilities.

You’ve worked for Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton in the past. Did history influence your designs then?

History always has been a great inspiration for most of the designers. In the past I have been inspired by different periods of time, from the medieval period to the hippy ’70s.

Now that I design my own line I think of sandals that I would like to wear, whereas before I was thinking more of the client of each fashion house. It is quite liberating.

Many of the sandals showcase complex and intricate leatherwork. Do you always have a strong idea of how they’re going to fit together?

Yes, most of the times I know how my design is going to be interpreted when it is made into a sandal. A few times however, when the idea I have is more complicated, I am not always sure how it is going to translate on the actual foot. My modelist, a pattern cutter, then steps in and tries to make things work, staying as close as possible to my original idea.

What makes Ancient Greek sandals timelessly stylish?

I think it is a mix of the rawness and feminine lines combined with good quality of leather. AGS is not a fashion brand, we want our styles to carry over time. Of course we are evolving, but we’ll always keep the same identity.

Are you planning any exciting new ventures in 2012?

For SS13 we are working on some more intricate styles inspired by ancient Greek jewellery. We are also developing some new constructions, a small platform and a higher wedge. You’ll see…

Ok, it’s a little pricey for what it is, but this key chain is not only a great gift, it’s also a really cute way to jazz up any summer accessories you already own. Sometimes your accessories are too new and nice to disregard, but they need a little refresh. Some people would call that economical.

This years Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was the usual spectacle. In the best sense of the word. Like fashion Christmas, it comes but once a year to fill the silk stockings of style mavens with lust, envy, sighs, gasps, shudders and the teeniest smidgen of self-satisfied bitchiness.

This years theme was “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations” – rather more obscure than say Barbarians versus Librarians, or Tarts & Vicars. As is de rigeur, a hefty proportion of the congregation made their way up the red steps of glory in Miuccia’s designs, some with more success (in our opinion) than others. Getting it right was ’90s ‘pop her in your mouth lilac dewdrop’ Gwyneth Paltrow and irritatingly, yet enviably, perfect Kate Bosworth. The recently betrothed Carrie Mulligan looked overwhelmed by her gown, whilst Eva Mendes startled in orange, jutting taffeta. We doubt Gosling was best pleased with that look.

On a more positive note, there were additional knock-out turns from Motilo Girl Poppy Delevingne in Chanel, Cate Blanchett in McQueen, Marion Cotillard in Christian Dior, Lana Del Rey in Altuzarra and Scarlett Johansson in Dolce & Gabbana.

This year’s ‘Crazy Cool’ nod goes to Karolina Kurkova in her jaw-dropping Rachel Zoe designed piece of magnificence; who looked ready to swim the English channel as if it were a vat of L’air de Rien, eschewing goose fat for sequins. Additional kooky attendees were the Thakoon swathed Christina Ricci who literally does look like fashion Christmas with that voluminous, flight-worthy bow on her back. Similarly, Sarah Jessica Parker makes us smile from our toes to our ears as if she has just placed us on a cloud and arranged some dove coloured puppies at our feet in her fairytale-esque Valentino.

Special mentions are reserved for the Green Carpet Challenge contender (bar Livia Firth) Cameron Diaz in some mighty ethical, and mighty fine, Stella McCartney. We were also delighted by everyone’s favourite CIA agent/troubled school girl Claire Danes in J. Mendel. So clean, so chic, so healthy – so desperate for season 2 of Homeland.

They are at the forefront of an as yet small, though soon to be big, swathe of designers taking inspiration from the bloggers who love them so. As opposed to looking to the FROW, or a slew of obscure artist’s work circa ’95 (which incidentally appears very familiar to what many of the other fashion houses ended up producing too), Three Floor take the street, or some nice woodland area (whatever photographs better with the outfit) of the blogosphere as their design cue each season.

As you may be able to guess, we’re impressed. Mightily. And have been since their first collection last Autumn. Not only are the price points decidedly ‘double-dip’ friendly, the clobber ain’t bad to boot. Of course by ‘ain’t bad’ we mean it is phenomenal.

Being the friendly fashion website that we are, we were invited down to set for a look behind the scenes at the top secret shooting of the High Summer campaign story. And in the spirit of generosity, amiability, and plain old loveliness – here are a few exclusive snippets of what you have in store come May 12th when the new line can finally be placed in our virtual shopping baskets. Think Liz Taylor worthy jeweled collars, sorbet-pleated trapeze maxis, disco day-glo lurex and a healthy handful of wind catching chiffon. Oh and a large dog; but we don’t think that’s for sale. GET THE LOOK

Everyone loves the damsel in distress look, but why not go for something difference than Medieval ladies with long tresses and floral dresses? A huge look for SS12 in nautical. Breton stripes, canvas, rope and wicker are all being used to brighten and lighten up summery looks. If you want to channel your shipwrecked seductress then go for a look that is both feminine and practical with a hint of sex appeal.

Invert the norm by wearing stripes on your lower half. Markus Lupfer has some gorgeous shorts if a good length that perfectly match the nautical crotchet of this Isabel Marant top. French Sole may be famous for their ballet flats, but these suede loafers look like they were made for parading about on the deck. A fun Aurelie Bidermann bracelet adds some colour to the ensemble, and the anchor charm adds to the theme, as does the barrel shape of the Nap Sac duffel bag and amazingly versatile Eugenia Kim fedora. Style Ahoy!

What did you look like when you were 15? Most of us were awkwardly growing out of our bodies and into our personalities, and the deep, but perfectly natural, humiliation of this process usually caused stroppy behaviour, confidence issues, and a tendency to err towards abominable fashion.

This particular Motilo contributor recollects her body shape resembling that of a fleshy tennis ball squashed onto a pair of Barbie legs, with the head of a 1970′s rock guitarist. This was all set off with a pair of turquoise embroidered dragon capri pants from Gap that were worn twice, if not three times a week.

How is it, then, that somebody like Chloë Moretz can swan into puberty looking like a princess? Her glossy locks, perfect pout and intelligent gaze somewhat work towards this look, but we also can’t help but admire her stylist.

In 2005 Moretz was a normal eight year old kid. She turned up to the Legend of Zorro premiere wearing an appropriately silly and frilly blue dress, clunky flats and a sequined bolero. Last year she shocked us all by nonchalantly arriving at the Vogue Fashion Fund Awards with red lipstick, a killer Suno dress and an attitude of effortless cool.

Her roles in reasonably adult films may have something to do with this. In 2010 she starred in Kick Ass alongside Nicholas Cage as a small, swearing, sassy superhero kid. In the same year she also appeared as one of the leads in the American remake of stunning Norwegian horror film Let The Right One In as Abby, the mysterious and dangerous vampire girl.

Moretz’ easy understanding of adult life propels her to express this through her dress sense. While many teenagers of her age are following the latest high street fashion trends – Moretz is setting them. On her days off she can often be seen in skinny jeans, leather jackets or blazers, and sporting a funky leopard print carry-on bag as she jet-sets around the world.

On the red carpet it’s a different story. This girl does not shy away from glamour, sporting super high heels and impressive labels at every event she goes to. In her upcoming film Hick she plays the protagonist Luli, a young Nebraskan girl running away from her alcoholic parents. Her co-star and fashion muse Blake Lively has formed a close bond with the youngster, and one of Moretz’ best friends is our previous Fresh Face, Emma Roberts. These influential allies in the style stakes have given her a strong identity in the industry, and have secured her amazing outfits, such as a Dolce & Gabbana to her film’s screening last Thursday.

Seeing as we’re celebrating a week of glamour, there was only one woman we could turn to as our style icon. Not only was Elizabeth Taylor the queen of accessorising and embellishment, she played someone who held the exact same passions thousands of years before, in the eponymous 1963 film Cleopatra.

Both the actress and the character were passionate, romantic and stylish. Cleopatra’s affairs with Mark Anthony and Julius Caesar have been immortalised in the works of Shakespeare and countless poems, novels, films and works of art. Although Cleopatra was born in 51BC and Taylor was born in 1932AD, the two women shared more than their romantic escapades in common. Both were considered at the forefront of fashion during the height of their power and influence. It was when Taylor played Cleopatra that her own style merged with that of the Egyptian ruler, and the themes and motifs of Ancient Egypt began to blend with her own love of statement jewellery.

Do you know what we’re excited about? The Costume Institute Met Ball. Every year this huge event gathers an eclectic assortment of textile fanatics in one very grand setting to celebrate fashion. Anyone who is anyone will be there, dressed to the nines and sponsored by their favourite designer. Think a whole bunch of crazy talented, crazy beautiful and just plain crazy stupid varieties of dress, or in some cases dressage. This is the ultimate red carpet occasion, like the Oscars but way, way better. The different themes, regarding the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s honorary exhibition, influence the evening’s attire, and you’re guaranteed to see some of the most directional looks of the year.

The 2012 Gala will be held on Monday, and with this in mind we decided to look back at some of our favourite Met Gala moments of the last decade.

Let’s start with an icon shall we? The Gala in 2009 had the theme of Model as Muse, and so was appropriately hosted by Marc Jacobs and his very own inspiration: Kate Moss. He dressed her head-to-upper-thigh in champagne gold, including a turban and super high stiletto platforms. Here we see them casually climbing a zebra print stairway to fashion heaven.

This bizzare pairing looks like a marriage made in Alice’s Wonderland. Vogue’s International Editor at Large and fashion goddess Daphne Guinness work some fierce Alexander McQueen looks from the Spring Summer 2011 collection, as the theme was an homage to the late designer’s impressive works. We’re calling this image ‘the tartan tart and the sexy swan’.

No need to explain why Justin Timberlake looks so surprised in this shot with Madonna. We think anyone would be wary of hugging a middle-aged woman wearing a full Louis Vuitton outfit that included thigh-high leather boots and what appear to be taffeta bunny ears.

Sophie Dahl shocked onlookers at the 2005 Met Gala by wearing a translucent vintage Alaïa knitted dress. Eschewing conventional lingerie, Dahl decided to ditch the bra and opt for some sensible and comfy cotton black pants. We’re in admiration of a woman who is so dedicated to the cause of comfort. Let’s just hope she didn’t have to run down any stairs.

Doesn’t time just fly? We remember the days when Mary Kate and Ashley were only photographed together with their curly tresses and girlish smiles. In 2005 they went to the Met Ball together complete with innocent expressions and complimentary Badgley Mischka gowns.

Our little girls have all grown up into the fashion tycoons of today and tomorrow.

The 2008 theme for the Met Ball was ‘Fashion and Fantasy’ which had many of the attendees going all out for a wacky colour-crazed effect. Kate Bosworth challenges the imagination with this amazingly textured, multi-coloured (and rare) vintage Chanel dress. Bonus sartorial points for the amused tete a tete going on between Karl Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour in the background.

Who better to symbolise the ‘American Woman’ of the Met Gala’s 2010 party than Katy Perry? She certainly caused a stir with her Thomas Kinkade light-up dress. Taste aside, it’s certainly an amazing piece of tailoring and technology. We like to imagine her providing light so other guests could find their dropped earrings, or to see if they had a spare hair pin at the bottom of their purses. Practi-cool.

It’s incredible to see how far the event has come in terms of glamour. The Gala had been going for over 50 years in 1998, and yet still Chloe Sevigny decided it would be acceptable to turn up in a baffling front-slit skirt with brown zip-up jacket and square-toe flats. We’re much more impressed with her 2010 effort. The sexy bra detail at the back of her Proenza Schouler dress perfectly encapsulated her edgy style.

Although everyone seemed to harp on about Gisele’s red gown last year, our personal favourite was Doutzen Kroes’ amazing Zac Posen dress. The huge tulle skirt pulls in to a simple but flattering tank-style top half. Special K are still in talks to have this image on their cereal boxes.

Last but not least, we need to mention Stella McCartney. She’s there every year and so is her loyal following of muses and, to be honest, fashion groupies. Liv Tyler, Kate Hudson and Kate Bosworth are all passionate followers of the perpetually wearable brand. Here we see a nice balance between razzmatazz and romance. We’re not sure what our favourite is, but kudos to McCartney for wearing a slim-leg, high waisted, low-neck, tight jumpsuit and still managing to look absolutely, well, stellar.

Recently Anna Dello Russo, a Motilo Girl and Editor at Large of Vogue Japan, has been working the trouser look. During her time at Salone del Mobile (the Milan Furniture Fair), she has been seen at several events covering those famous legs in some of the best tailoring in town.

Luckily she’s posted exclusive street style photos for us in her Motilo Girls blog, including a picture at the Versace House with Donatella Versace herself. Dello Russo wears a printed shirt designed by the Italian fashion power house, but her jacket is Pucci Resort, and the trousers and bag are by Celine. The mix of lemon and bubblegum pink shows that the pastel trend is a firm fixture in Dello Russo’s summer wardrobe.

Pucci has long been a favourite of the irreverent style icon. She’s also been working an azure blue trouser suit from the resort collection. Matched with bold orange details such as a patterned Prada shirt, a Celine bag, and Gianvito Rossi shoes, here is a bold example of colour blocking and how it can work for a formal occasion.

One thing Dello Russo has certainly been thinking about of late is her summer vacation. All her Resort clothing has her in the mood for poolside drinks, which prompted her to make this look for that purpose. A body sculpting Lisa Marie Fernandez suit sets the tone of femme fatale, and she accessorises this with Dior Metore sunglasses, a vintage Chanel vanity bag, a Eugenia Kim fedora and some Azzedine Alaïa sandals. Of course, this isn’t an outfit for swimming in, so some simple accessories, like a pair of Jules Smith hoops and an Alexander McQueen wrap bracelet can only add to the glamour. All she needs to complete it is some Rodial bum lift, to ensure all that skin on show is taut and svelte!

What led you to start your own blog?

I had been working as a stylist for a while, and missed having a creative outlet that was purely for myself. My roommate had be asking me to make one for months, but I had to do it in my own time – perfectionist!

Did you always know you wanted to write about and capture fashion trends?

Maybe on some level, yes. But there was a big portion of my life where I convinced myself I was going to be a psychologist.

How do you go about creating your blog? What is your process?

I stick to my editorial schedule, and I read lots of blogs to get a feel for what I like, and what is appropriate.

What makes Lela London unique?

I’m not only fashion based, and I don’t only post pictures of outfits. I want every post to be helpful, or funny, or to mean something to someone. It’s beauty, it’s lifestyle, but it’s all relevant to the modern woman.

Tongue in chic.

Favourite item you’ve ever featured?

The current item I am obsessed with are my neon heels from Nelly which I featured a few posts ago!

Who is your style icon?

Grace Coddington. Homegirl knows how to make the most insane things wearable.

If you could re-style a celebrity, who would it be, and what would you do?

Britney Spears. Her body is so fantastic, but she seems to highlight all of the wrong features. I would introduce her to a new make-up artist, Antonio Berardi, and load her up with Tom Binns jewellery. Sleek with personality, you know?

What is the accessory you cannot live without?

I never take off this silver ring on my middle finger (left hand, if it matters) or a little silver diamond heart necklace from my beloved Manfriend. Safety blankets.

What is your favourite thing about Motilo?

Inspiration! It is so much fun to play with such a big closet, and see how it translates into my own wardrobe.

How would you describe your own style?

Confused! One day I feel all “retro goddess”, the next I’m in wedged trainers and spiked jewellery. Getting dressed is my playtime.

Well, my book, She Said Style, is naturally my favourite!

Fashion highlight of 2011?

Ooof, HARD. For the world? Kate Middleton’s Alexander McQueen (Sarah Burton) wedding dress. For me? The Sixties takeover: Mad Men, Pan Am, Prada, etc. A close runner up would be Ryan Gosling’s bomber jacket in Drive. No explanation needed, I just want to be that jacket.

What other bloggers do you admire?

All of them! Blogging is such a personal thing, I would find it so hard to make a shortlist. Sometimes I will just click through comments on blogs and find these incredibly admirable blogs with 10 followers. Obviously the Motilo blog is up there…!

The look: Texture, in the shape of plaits, twists and flyaways, is a fun, modern way to wear hair up.

The red carpet take: Look to Jessica Alba at last year’s BAFTA’s. She wore her hair up with the focal point being two braids running from ear to ear like hair bands, and with plenty of flyaways to give it a childlike essence. At the Breaking Dawn premiere in LA Kristen Stewart – the queen of effortless red carpet looks – worked an almost messy plaited up-do.

Get the look: Frederic Fekkai stylist Adir Abergel gave Kristen’s hair texture with a cocktail of Fekkai Coiff Bouffant Lifting and Texturizing Spray Gel, £17, and sea salt spray, before rough drying. The hair at the front was lightly backcombed and pulled loosely back; then he literally took random sections of hair either plaiting, fishtail braiding or twisting them before all the sections were gathered, twisted and pinned up.

Modern Straight 

The look: Straight hair is making a comeback but forget the poker straight tresses of the ’90s the modern aesthetic is expensive-looking – smooth and straight with subtle volume and a slight curve at the ends; far more flattering.

Catwalk inspiration: The look is set to be big news come autumn with Jonathan Saunders and Victoria Beckham sending models out with smooth, polished hair at their Autumn/Winter 12 shows.

The red carpet take: John Frieda hairstylist Harry Josh is championing this new look, ‘Many women with medium to long hair are wearing it down and straight. Simple chic hair lets their dress do the talking’. Josh works with Hollywood heavyweights like Gwyneth Paltrow (he styled her straight for last year’s Oscars) and Rose Byrne who wowed with a freshly cut bob at this year’s SAG Awards.

Get the look: To get the sleek finish of Byrne’s hair, whatever your length, follow Josh’s steps… First use John Frieda Full Repair Protecting Root Lift Foam, £5.69. “I needed to get a lot of lift at the roots” said Josh, “without that it would have looked flat”. He then applied a little Full Repair Perfect Ends Deep Infusion Serum, £6.99, to keep the ends protected and super-smooth. Then using a natural bristle brush he blow-dried the hair angling the dryer down to maximise shine and minimise flyaways. Josh finished by using heated rollers to style the ends under, rather than leaving them poker straight.

Functional Accessories on Show 

The look: A modern way to wear hair accessories is to show off the more functional, less glitzy pieces.

Catwalk inspiration: At House of Holland Spring/Summer 12 hairstylist Adam Reed used Goody Camille Barrettes, £4.50, spray painting them rose gold to match the metal on the accessories designed by Katie Hillier and the heels of the Nicholas Kirkwood shoes.

The red carpet take: At Cannes last year Diane Kruger stepped out with a pretty, textural up-do accessorised with lots of kirby grips which Reed spray painted to compliment the colour of her Calvin Klein gown.

Get the look: “When I did Diane’s hair it looked great as it gave the hairstyle a modern twist. This is an easy look to try at home because you don’t have to worry about messing up your hairstyle trying to hide the accessories,” says Reed.

Sunset Eyes

The look: Bronze, orange and even red eyeshadow may sound daunting but it can make for an extremely flattering, yet striking look.

The red carpet take: At last year’s Oscars Scarlett Johansson’s make-up artist Gianpaolo Ceciliato complimented her purple dress with a blend of light gold and copper eyeshadow using Dolce & Gabbana Smooth Eye Colour Quad in Stromboli, £38. “I kept the rest of her face neutral—I didn’t want her to look overdone,” he said. Mary-Kate Olsen went one step further with red eyeshadow at the 2011 MET Gala. Make-up artist Molly R.Stern used Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl, £17.50, and Blush in Exhibit A, £21, on the eyes. “She left looking like a Klimt painting” said Stern.

Get the look: Make-up artist Georgina Graham says, “Sunset eyes is actually a super flattering look on all skin tones and eye colours as it really makes your eye colour pop”. Go easy at first you can always add more if you’re feeling confident. “Experiment with cream or powder and start by applying near the lash line with a brush or finger and blend the product upwards towards the crease” says Graham. Barry M and MAC have a great range of bold eyeshadows.

Skin Finishing 

The look: Skin finishing is all perfecting the complexion on both the face and body; even tone with ‘hyper-real’ sheen is the look the A-list wants to achieve.

The red carpet take: Stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, Penelope Cruz and Emma Stone call on the team at St Tropez, to get their skin glowing before red carpet events. And it’s not just about a tan, “all of the St. Tropez treatments enhance face and body contours, giving skin a radiant and natural glow.  A good tan or skin finish hides a multitude of sins such as scars, bruising and stretch marks,” says St.Tropez Skin Finishing Expert Nichola Joss.

The New Smoky 

The look: Smoky eyes don’t have to be charcoal. “Perfect your base and you can have a lot of fun with colour” says make-up artist Florrie White, who works with Alexa Chung.

The red carpet take: Ginnifer Goodwin proved this at last year’s MET Gala when she stepped out with emerald green eyes, as did Glee’s Lea Michele when she wowed at the 2011 Vanity Fair Oscar party with a navy smoky eye that popped thanks to bright blue liner.

Get the look: “Match your eye colour to an eyeshadow that will emphasise the colours already in your eyes” says White. “Blue eyes should stick to earthy tones of pinks, purples and silvery shades of taupe and grey; green eyes can play with rich jewel purple colours; grey eyes should bring out the colour in your eyes with blues and greens; while brown eyes have the pick of the palette and can go with everything from deep purples to bright greens”. GET THE LOOK

When you consider embellishment, it’s all too easy to think about evening dresses or cocktail parties. Beadwork and intricate detail seem to fit perfectly into formal occasions, but there is also an innovative way to fit this trend into your daytime wardrobe.

ENTER THE COMPETITION

Sometimes the people whose style we most admire dedicate very little time to thinking about fashion. Amelia Earhart was, and still is, known for being a style icon, but it was also her modest charisma, unabridged passion and impressive skill at flying that garnered her reputation as a legend.

Earhart was born in 1897 to a family of fluctuating wealth and good stature. After a turbulent childhood of frequent moving, unhappy schooling, and confused ambition, it was well into 1920 before she experienced her first flight. As soon as she had risen into the air, she knew that this was her calling, and worked a number of jobs in order to fund her flying lessons and the purchase of her first aircraft.

In order to fit in with the few female pilots in the US, Earhart purchased a leather jacket that she reportedly slept in for three days to give it the characteristic ‘worn’ appearance of other aviators. She also cropped her hair, and took to sewing her own clothes to ensure they were both feminine and practical.

As well as becoming renowned for being the first woman to fly solo over the Atlantic, her celebrity status stretched to her own thrifty style of clothing and luggage. Women across the globe looked to her for inspiration, and became impassioned by her dedication to women’s causes. Even Eleanor Roosevelt became one of her closest friends and admirers.

Even when she wasn't in the air, Earhart showcased style that was simple and feminine, but always practical.

In 1937 Earhart and her colleagues attempted a flight around the world. During one of the routine legs of the journey some problems with radio transmission created complications in guiding the aircraft to land, resulting in the mysterious disappearance of Earhart, her plane and her co-pilot Fred Noonan. Although Earhart’s end may be shrouded in confusion and controversy, her strength and determination still live on.

The other day I met Ron Arad, the industrial designer who I always admired for his contemporary approach to art and objects. For once, it was not in Milan, at the Salone del Mobile, but in central London, for the launch of the new Kenzo fragrance, Madly Kenzo. Arad designed the glass bottle for it, and I found it genius.

It has been a long time since an artist created something commercial, like a perfume bottle. It was very much in fashion during the excess of the ’80s and the beginning of the ’90s, and it is so refreshing to see a collaboration like this for Kenzo.

The French house has always been associated with fun and colourful fashion, and for this reason, they commissioned Ron Arad, with his eclectic fantasies, to interpret the bottle of their new scent.

Arad said he was inspired by butterflies’ wings, the way they move in the air, and he imagined himself drawing their pattern of flight. It took a long time for the creation to materialise, in fact, he managed to finish a couple of other projects while still working on the perfect shape for this bottle. The result is a beautiful and ergonomic glass object.

Kenzo also asked perfumer extraordinaire with the sexiest of all ‘noses’, Aurelien Guichard, to create the fragrance. I must say, it’s as fresh as a garden. You could certainly imagine all those colourful butterflies flying freely and happily.

So who is the face of the perfume? The young British actress Amber Anderson, naturally.

What led you to start your own blog?

I always had some kind of journal writing/note taking/inspiration sharing platform to showcase my interests, whether it was online or just an old cork board hanging on top of my desk. Other blogs I had started were loved and left behind but hopethislasts.com was created as a new personal project for 2011, and obviously one that I hope will last. The name stemmed from this idea, and I wanted to create a blog that showcased my inspirations, personal aesthetic and my original content in photography, styling, art and poetry.

Did you always know you wanted to write about and capture fashion trends?

I knew that I wanted to express myself and my personal style without any boundaries and that’s what hopethislasts.com enables me to do. Writing and capturing fashion trends is just a part of it, but definitely a favourite!

How do you go about creating your blog? What is your process?

I usually do a blog post when I find or capture inspiration. I didn’t have a set process until I recently determined my main content: personal style posts, snippets of my life, interviews with inspiring people, handmade collages with favourite imagery and wish-lists, because it’s always good to dream!

That’s a tricky one! I’d probably take Alexa Chung’s preppy tom-boy style and experiment more with the boho look. Although I do love her quirkiness, a beautiful flowing maxi dress would look amazing on those never ending legs!

What is the accessory you cannot live without?

My all-in-one power tool: the iPhone.

How would you describe your own style?

For a long time I couldn’t really put my finger on my style, all I knew was that it was a little undone. Then one of my friends, a street style blogger, described my style as hippy-luxe; free spirited but not careless. I think that sums it up quite perfectly.

Only one book is a little difficult to answer! I’m particularly drawn to the work of author Paulo Coelho. Such beautiful and inspiring words.

Fashion highlight of 2011?

Looking back, I can already see how much my style and blog has grown over the past year. Being gifted with items from brands I admire, outfit features from online websites and magazines, and being exposed as ‘top favourite looks’ during Australian Fashion Week have all been highlights in 2011. It’s the humble beginnings that have got my heart fluttering every time my work is admired. I guess that will never stop my cheeks from blushing.

One of the barriers to enjoying all the glitz and glamour of travelling is the abject horror of the actual journey. Not many of us are good flyers, and even fewer have the luxury of flying first class.

Luckily, our stylist has put together the perfect outfit for eight hours of inertia, which also provides an insightful glimpse into hand luggage necessities. This week we’re all going on a summer holiday. Ok, maybe not in reality, but in our minds it’s time to plan all the gorgeous things we’ll be wearing and dream about all the stuff we won’t be doing. As we lie there not checking our emails or thinking about what time Waitrose shuts on a Sunday, we want to be glowing and carefree, much like our Fresh Face of the week – Emma Roberts.

This youngster is no stranger to fame. Not only is she the niece of Hollywood superstar Julia Roberts, her father is Eric Roberts – otherwise known as ‘Ohhh! That guy!’ Google it and you’ll see what we mean.

After spending much of her early childhood on her aunt’s film sets, it wasn’t long before her involvement in show business began to spark. Many of her movies and TV series, such as Unfabulous, Nancy Drew and Wild Child are aimed at a teenage audience, but recently her roles have become more adult, such as her upcoming film Virginia, which follows the relationships of a mentally unstable woman, set for US release May 18.

Both on and off screen, Roberts rocks an edgy balance between youthful simplicity and girlish scruffiness. Recently seen at LA festival Coachella, she’s either wearing microshorts and fun print tops or daring playsuits and mesh dresses. Her three faithful travel accessories seem to be a pair of white converse, her favourite slouchy satchel, and some oversized sunnies – classic and versatile.

However, on the red carpet things couldn’t be more different. The usually über casual starlet can seriously fix up look sharp. Rather than go with the crowd of other young artists in their long gowns, Roberts often opts for the trouser look. In the last month she’s been seen favouring trousers over dresses for most formal occasions, whether it’s vintage wide cut Jonathan Saunders or curve accentuating Yves Saint Laurent jumpsuits.

Marco de Vincenzo is a relatively new name in the panorama of Italian Fashion. After graduating, he won the 2009 ‘Who’s Next’ search for new fashion talent competition, supported by Italian Vogue. In September of that same year, he showed his first collection during Milan Fashion Week and it was a great success. His clothes are feminine and sexy, but always elegant. They often have references to the quintessential Italian style that was part of his education, from the baroque Sicily, where he was born, to the neo-classic Rome, his adoptive city. He’s definitely a name to watch, and here he answers some fun questions for Motilo.

When did you make your first dress?

I must have been 10 years old, and while on holiday on a beach, I wrapped a girlfriend of mine in a towel trying to make a ‘dress’ out of it. I haven’t stopped since then…

Why did you want to work in fashion?

At some point my lifelong passion for drawing moved onto clothes, becoming project planning. It was no more than pencil on a sheet of paper, but it was my aim to create and make something new. It was this feeling that enlightened me on my future path.

Who inspired you then and who inspires you now?

It can be an image, an object, a person, a detail, everything can inspire me and become pliable to my needs. Then and now.

I am Sicilian, and live in Rome. I consider beauty as a gift from the past, which has been surrounding us for centuries. I would say this is part of my culture.

Your favorite holiday destination?

Sicily, definitely. I have to go back there at least once a year, preferably in the summer. I can’t escape the lure of that beautiful island.

This week we’ve been thinking long and hard about being sexy. From wearing sheer materials, to underwear as outerwear, to musings on lingerie, it has been a sensual journey of silks, lace and unabashed body confidence. All of this prompted us to think about the industry in general, and we realised swiftly that sex is used in almost every campaign to sell clothes. Sometimes it works, sometimes it is embarrassing, hilarious, and entertaining to the extreme.

Here’s a collection of some of the most famous, or infamous, sexual fashion adverts.

1. THE INTIMATE SMELL OF TOM FORD

Tom Ford‘s campaigns characteristically ooze sex, but none so much as this insane attempt to get attention. The launch of his first men’s fragrance in 2007 included an advertising campaign with the bottle nestled between the pert breasts of an open-mouthed woman. When this garnered only mild shock and fury from the prim and proper members of society, he decided to get slightly more extreme. An advert was released soon after showing the bottle snugly resting between the model’s upper upper thighs. Nicely lubed, her hand creeps down towards that area – but what exactly is she hoping to caress? We’ll never know, but one thing we can guess is that both complaints and sales rocketed for the company that year.

2. GUCCI HAS A CLOSE SHAVE

Now, although this is Gucci, technically it’s actually Tom Ford again. He was responsible for running this SS03 campaign, where, as you can see, a strapping lad looks longingly at the expertly shaved ‘G’ symbol in the young lady’s nether regions. This image also received a whole host of complaints and bans, but we’re rather impressed with the skill and accuracy of the shave. There’s absolutely no way she did that with a Gillette Venus. The great Mario Testino took this picture and brilliantly named it ‘Pubic Enemy’. To all those getting in a furor about this, just be thankful that the campaign wasn’t named ‘Public Enema’.

3. YVES SAINT LAURENT’S HEROINE

Oh wait, Tom Ford again? Yes, this guy has some serious issues. It’s actually possible that he is the person skewing the mythical statistic that ‘men think about sex every seven seconds.’ Most men manage once every ten minutes, but the constant writhing of Ford’s imagination took the survey off the radar. This Yves Saint Laurent campaign for Opium perfume in 2000 caused widespread controversy. We’re not sure why, as it seems perfectly natural for Sophie Dahl to be totally naked on some blue velvet in the throws of ecstasy, while wearing elaborate gold sandals and diamond jewellery. In fact, the only offensive thing about the picture is the ill-advised combination of lime green eyeshadow, berry coloured lips, and red hair.

4. SISLEY GOT MILK

Yeah, we were surprised too. Sisley have been known to use pretty shocking images in the past, including a, frankly, hilarious one of two models pretending to snort a camisole like it was cocaine, but it was this 2001 image that struck a chord with the public. That chord was the one linked directly to outrage and extreme arousal. We have never seen anyone look so blissfully sensual while drinking milk before, but then again, we’ve never seen anyone squirt milk directly into their mouth from an udder and allow it to drip down their chin and onto their taut thighs before. We also like the legs akimbo detail, with a glance at her innocent white panties. Subtle.

5. DOLCE & GABBANA: TANNED, TIGHT AND TEASING

In 2010 this delightful advert hit our screens. Aside from the slow head turn at 0.02, the bulge-less speedo shot at 0.05, and the hilarious knowing smile, which says ‘i’ve seen your naked body and i’m about to see it again’ at 0.08, our favourite moment is the gratuitous crotch crush at 0.24. It’s a real teaser. A lot of people would probably genuinely like to see what happens next but, alas, we’re never given that chance. Dolce & Gabbana are actually renowned for using obscenely sexy, oiled and undulating muscled men in many of their adverts, but the Light Blue perfume ones are the most entertaining. The slightly older one with the end shot of the cliffs which look suspiciously like a woman’s genitals is another winner.

6. AMERICAN APPAREL ARE OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Not much needs to be said about this careers poster for the newly opened American Apparel store in Amsterdam. It’s a city that is known internationally for its free and easy attitude to prostitution and recreational drug use, and this picture shows that American Apparel have cheerfully decided that a no holds barred approach to the advert would work well for the residents. The LA based clothing company have been in trouble for exploitative images since their inception in 1989. Founder Dov Charney loves getting his sales assistants to pose on beds and bare their bums and breasts all in the name of good fashion. We like to picture what the poster would look like if the store ever closed down. Maybe a shot of the same model with three children after an eight hour waitressing shift. Now Closed.

7. DIESEL DOUBLE DARES YOU TO LOOK AWAY

This, surely is pure genius. The Diesel SS10 campaign showed male and female models half undressed on derelict sofas, probably in the middle of some sweaty orgy. Of course, the few shreds of clothing they’re still wearing happen to be expertly distressed denim. Hence the comedically brilliant tagline: ‘Sex Sells. Unfortunately we sell jeans’. Who said you couldn’t kill two birds with one stone? Looking into this self assured model’s hazy lustful gaze is one thing, but those carefully ripped hotpants are a whole other kettle of desirable fish. Blurring the lines between wanting someone and wanting something is a toughie, but they hit the nail on the head with this one.

So let’s presume you’ve been living under a rock, or accidentally got locked into your house with no wifi-access or cell-phone reception, but in case you didn’t know, Coachella is ON. The celebrities have been out en force to champion the micro short, inconspicuous shades, floral head garlands and enough fringing to trim every lamp in Eastbourne. And looky here, there have even been some gratuitous public displays of affection. See, they’re just like us.

As the week progresses, our hair is gathering a stronger and stronger resemblance to dear old Wurzel Gummage, which is not a trend we saw taking prevalence in the Spring Summer shows incidentally. Luckily, some helpful gal has compiled an inextricably useful gallery of 100 hair dos for us to take inspiration from, so we end up with far less hair don’ts.

The other Queen Victoria, who’s husband prefers tattoos to piercings, celebrated her 38th birthday this week. Whilst we were pretty sorry about not getting to sample some of her undoubtedly home-baked cake – these candid personal photographs of Mrs Beckham on her social networking platforms kind of makes up for it.

Lastly, Roberto Cavalli has insulted Anna Wintour. Publicly. What in the name of leopard-print underpants did he do that for?

Dinner with friends never looked so chic

We’ve come a long way since the ’70s, when fine dining consisted of a frosty prawn cocktail served alongside the best napkins mum could find. These days, the simple meal is being taken to new heights. Literally.

Tuesday the 17th of April saw the final evening in a series of four held by Peroni Nastro Azzurro take place in the awe-inducing setting of London’s Tower Bridge. Hosted by our one and only Gianluca Longo, the fifty strong guest list read like that of any exclusive soiree. Alongside Motilo CEO Sofia Barattieri di San Pietro sat good friends Paula Reed of Grazia UK, Sara Brajovic – Motilo Girl Extraordinaire, business mind Imran Amed, trainer to the stars Jonathan Lomax, iconic milliner Stephen Jones and Liberty London Girl herself, Sasha Wilkins.

Accompanying the well-earned bevy of chilled Peroni beers, guests were treated to Italian cuisine and scintillating conversation. Sources say the creative melange of the assembled crowd worked perfectly, as raucous laughter was rumoured to be heard as far as Croydon.

Previous ‘Amici di Peroni’ events, literally translated as ‘Friends of Peroni’, have been held in Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow and sought to bring together pioneers of style in order to spark insightful conversation, as is the tradition of the Italian dinner.

In this dismal London weather, it’s hard to look chic. Whilst the desire to leave the house in a melange of bin bags and duvets is strong, Motilo Girl Sara Brajovic knows how to balance practicality and style.

The clothing equivalent of a chocolate eclair if you will. Brazilian cut La Perla lingerie in a deep berry colour is chosen by Brajovic to ensure that there is a spring in her step, even if the weather remains distinctly lacklustre. Dark House of Harlow sunglasses are essential in case a gust of wind reveals more than you would care to share – at least you can protect your identity.

A classic example of the British take on eroticism

At the behest of Motilo, I’ve been pondering lingerie. I’ve done a lot of pondering, and my pondering has led me to the conclusion that there is still much pondering to be done. Here, therefore, are eight of the great unanswered questions of lingerie.

1. The big question: Is sexy lingerie designed for men or women? Most of the adverts certainly seem designed for the former, though one imagines that on the whole it’s the proximity to total nakedness of a woman in bra and pants that men go for, rather than thinking “Oh, lovely French knickers and I do like what they’ve done with the trim, though the hand washing must be a right pain”. (Caitlin Moran nails this point in her peerless How to Be A Woman, as with so much else). 7. Bra size measurers: get yourselves into a union and standardize your measuring tapes, please. Exhaustive and rigorous questioning of everyone I’ve met today reveals that I am not alone in being told three radically different sizes by three different shops. Is an inch not just an inch?

8. Tights are one of the finest inventions of the 20th century. The team who invented lyrca in the 1940s ought to have been given a Nobel Prize. No, ALL of the Nobel Prizes. The people who design the tights for Falke ought to be knighted. Woolly, silky, lacy, patterned, warm, nuetral, shocking pink: there is a pair of tights for every occasion. With one exception and one alone: American Tan tights. There is no occasion for these. Indeed, there is no excuse for them. None whatsoever. Ok, so this is not a question, but it’s a fact.
