22-year-old Ché Zara Blomfield is a curator, fashion designer and promoter based in London. Her latest project is an art exhibition & independent publication showcase called The Composing Rooms. I stopped by Bloomsbury to chat about art spaces and her upcoming jersey collection.
Ché says, “The concept is a project space. The goal of a space or a party or anything is that people can meet each other in a real environment rather than on the internet. To have that personal contact, physical interaction, to see the work and books and zines in person. I like to encourage people from different media to work together.”
The exhibition features four artists who work in several mediums: Rasha Kahil, Thomas Jeppe, Paul Cowan, and Daif King. It ends next Wednesday (13 October). In a few months there will be another Composing Rooms opening up in a new space. I don’t like the term pop-up. It’s a transient gallery. It’s so last minute when you find out whether you can take a space or not. I’d love to do it overseas as well. There’s always a space somewhere. It’s just meeting somebody who’s interested in utilizing that space.”
ON LAUNCHING HER LABEL
“I used to work as a buyer/Creative Director for No-one in East London. When I was a buyer at No-one I realized there wasn’t a jersey label like this. There were really expensive jersey divisions like Etoile by Isabel Marant, 100 pounds for a tee shirt, or Christopher Kane… or there’s American Apparel or Gap and I wasn’t into them,” she says.
“Independent boutiques couldn’t buy in to those brands, so they were battling against these big labels. So I came up with the concept to do a simple collection that can go into boutiques as a basic to be mixed up with more exciting pieces,” Che adds.
“Max Allen and I started the label Max & Ché. I did a trial collection of three pieces to three different stores. They all sold out. Now it’s a collection of fourteen pieces. It’s all produced in London. I’ve got buyers interested in America, Korea, Russia, and in London. There’s quite a lot of demand. In a few months, it will be at 172 on Brick Lane and No-one in East London… For all these projects I like to encourage people from different mediums to work together,” she said.
The Composing Rooms presents ‘The Corridor to Success’ featuring the work of Rasha Kahil, Thomas Jeppe, Paul Cowan, and Daif King, at 42 Theobalds Road, Bloomsbury, London. Open 12-6 Daily until 13 October. Closing party 13 October 8-11 pm.
