The Boyfriend Sweater
Sometimes it’s sexy to wear skintight clothing. If you’re out on the town, or donning a Catwoman outfit for Halloween, for example, it is perfectly acceptable to put on clothes that you’re only going to be able to peel off. The trend for this Autumn, however, is far more comfortable and looks pretty chic too – we’re talking about oversized.
This trend comes in many forms. We’ve already told you how to wear it, and given you some inspirations for outerwear worn in a bigger, better way. Now we move onto a look that all girls dream of at some point in their life – the boyfriend sweater. It could be argued that the moment when a couple really fall in love is the point when the female is allowed to wear her other half’s favourite jumper in full public view. It’s a magical time – the shoulders will surely fall off and the length will fall low, needing some kind of casual tucking.
Now, we’ve decided that this lopsided luxury should not just be exclusive to lovers, and it seems that Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez had a similar thought when designing Proenza Schouler’s Autumn Winter collection. Alongside their draped and tied samurai wraps, coats and skirts there were some simply gorgeous shimmering baggy knits. It’s the best of both world’s really, the cosy comfort that the oversized shape brings, with the glamour and girlish charm of a dainty print or feminine material.
If you want to recreate the look then invest in Proenza Schouler’s unique structured miniskirts in either the duck egg or the autumnal fiery orange. A great boyfriend sweater can be found from Preen, complete with a floaty satin panel. A pair of embellished black ankle boots from Alaia can be teamed with some thick black tights, and an edge of urban interest can be found in Paco Rabanne’s textured bright blue bag, and a Eddie Borgo armour ring.
