Top 10 Collars

In the last couple of years a trend has grown which adds a delicious element of versatility to your look. Detachable collars. You’ll all be aware of them. Karl Lagerfeld popularised them when he launched his cheaper KARL label, as a pastiche of his own iconic style. Now even the high street stores stock them, and they’re the perfect way to freshen up your winter dresses and jumpers. Having a peter pan collar poking out of your top can add an extra bit of embellishment, sparkle or a splash of colour. Here are the best that the season has to offer.

Top 10 Collars

1. Karl Lagerfeld, Black Diamond and Hydrothermal Emerald-embellished Suede Collar; £29,000, motilo.com

One of the reasons collars are so awesome is that they’re basically like a form of jewellery. If you’re wading around in spare cash, want to invest in something timeless but also contemporary, or if you’re thinking of fantasy gifts for Christmas, then this collar from the trend’s king, Karl Lagerfeld, has to be no. 1. Featuring black diamonds and a huge emerald, it’s a unique masterpiece.

2. Marni, Rabbit Collar; £1,060, motilo.com

A fraction of the price, but still the same amount of punch, this Marni rabbit fur collar in a popping red can be worn with a coat or leather jacket instead of a scarf to add some structured warmth to your outerwear.

3. Cedric Charlier, Copper Scarf Collar; £90, motilo.com

Another scarf replacement collar, this emulates the polo neck, with a sweeping skirt to cover your collar bones and shoulders. The glistening metallic sheen makes it a great accompaniment to a classic monochrome or all-black outfit.

4. Ohne Titel, Cotton Weave Snood; £185, motilo.com

In the same vein, a tight-fitting snood does look an awful lot like a detachable polo neck, and can be worn in this way. If you have a favourite top or dress that leaves you feeling a little exposed, pop this on to add a new dimension. We love the geometric monochrome weave on this one.

5. Eddie Borgo, Spike Collar; £640, motilo.com

If you’re more of a rock’n'roll kind of girl, you can always adopt a punk inspired dog collar into your evening look, or in the office if you’re really brave. Eddie Borgo’s spikes are daring and statement making.

6. Alexander McQueen, Shearling Collar; £595, motilo.com

Shearling is one of those materials that always becomes popular in the winter thanks to it’s adorably soft appearance and feel. Usually you can find it in the linings of jackets or boots, but Alexander McQueen have put together a particularly fluffy bundle to nestle into your neck. Perfect over a christmassy knit.

7. 3.1 Phillip Lim, Pointed Metallic-leather Collar; £140, motilo.com

Adding some formality or geek chic to an outfit becomes super easy with Phillip Lim’s pointed detachable collar. That flash of silver joining the white pointed peaks adds a bit of sparkle too, making this appropriate for day or night.

8. Co, Blue Fur Stole; £425, motilo.com

It’s more of a stole than a collar, as the name suggests, but the soft feathery blue doesn’t limit it to just gallivanting in the great outdoors over a trench. The rich colour can make a rather wonderful finale to some creative winter layering.

9. Carven, Cotton Square Collar; £95, motilo.com

If you’re a fan of the shirt-under-jumper look for the office, but hate the gathered sleeves and cuff issues you get when you wear something bulky under a fine cashmere knit, then this is your perfect solution. The extra bib material even works for v-necks, and you get the streamlined soft silhouette you always dreamed of.

10. Peter Pilotto, Fox Fur Collar; £1,160, motilo.com

Arguably one of Peter Pilotto’s most popular looks for their Autumn Winter collection was the one that included this incredible Fox Fur collar. The beautiful tri-tone colours, the musky grey/green, the lime and the sky blue work together to create something memorable, warm, soft and versatile.
