Which First Lady has the best style?

Anyone who hasn’t been locked in a cave for the last couple of months will be getting excited by the imminent American presidential election. Whether you’re an Obama obsessive or a Romney rooter – you’ll certainly have noted the insane Twitter storm that has been created from the different manifestos, campaigns and the infamous televised debates.
Being a fashion focused site, at Motilo we couldn’t help but think about the leading ladies of America’s past. These women were strong, motivated, influential and serious – but they all thought about their style. Jackie Kennedy-Onassis was arguably the first style icon of the political world. Her many gowns designed by Oleg Cassini took the world by storm, and she became known for her shift dresses, matching coats, pillbox hats, three-strand pearl necklace, berry brooch by Jean Schumberger of Tiffany’s and of course the terrifying blood-stained pink Chanel suit she wore on the day of her husband’s assassination.
Another icon has to be Nancy Reagan – who perfectly encapsulates the wealth and spending of the ’80s era. A champion of luxurious designers like Oscar de la Renta, she would dress in energetic colours, especially her favourite fire-engine red. Her James Galanos dress, designed for her husband’s inauguration, was estimated to have cost around $10,000.
This couldn’t be further from Hilary Clinton, whose serious political career always moved her to dress sensibly and practically. Clinton is notorious for loving her pant suits and two-pieces in a wide and exotic variety of colours – almost every colour of the rainbow in fact.
Finally we have our First Lady of the moment – the truly gorgeous Michelle Obama. She has spent the last four years inspiring people with her energy and enthusiasm for education, women’s rights and philanthropy, but her style certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed. Having such a gorgeously toned figure means she can show of her arms and legs in slightly more daring outfits, but can also keep things classic, like the one-shouldered Jason Wu inaugural gown. Plus, how can we forget her incredible cover for US Vogue’s March 2009 issue?
With this in mind, Gianluca Longo asked our Motilo Girls, Poppy Delevingne, Sara Brajovic and Anna Dello Russo the following question:
As the US election edges nearer, which First Lady’s style do you admire the most?
- Jackie Kennedy
- Michelle Obama
- Hilary Clinton
- Nancy Reagan
